The son of a Spanish immigrant, Raul wasn’t privileged in his old days. Raul had three brothers and four sisters. None of his siblings and he were allowed to attend classes. Later Raul and Fidel insisted on attending the Jesuit school of Colegio Dolores in Santiago and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Havana.

After tying knots on 26 January 1959, Vilma became the president of the Cuban Federation of Women. Alejandro Castro Epsin is their only son, and they have three daughters- Deborah, Mariela, Nilsa, respectively.
