Holzhauer was born on 23 July 1984 in Naperville, Illinois, to his parents Nachiko Ide Holzhauer and Juergen Holzhauer. His father was a German immigrant while his grandmother was Japanese. When he was just four years old, his teachers were amazed by his arithmetic abilities.
